Established in 1977, Community College East Gippsland is a Registered Training Organisation offering a range of accredited short courses as well as complete qualifications in the areas of hospitality, information technology, aged care work, children's services, civil construction, retail and business including medical terminology. Community College East Gippsland also offers basic education for adults, English as a Second Language and VCAL.
Winner of the "Outstanding Provider of the Year 2005" award, Community College East Gippsland is managed by a committee of management overseeing a staff of 16 people.
Community College East Gippsland has also been recognized by both the Federal and State governments for our high quality, innovative program delivery by being awarded substantial funding for a range of programs: Work for the Dole, Community Jobs, Community Hubs, POEM, Language and Literacy, Vocational and employment skills programs.


Community College East Gippsland has embraced the notion of e-learning / blended delivery as a given. CCEG has, throug hthis proejct delviered their first fully online course.
There is a definite commitment to it from senior management. Moreover, the organisation's vision and mission also formalizes this, through its commitment to meeting the community needs in the best way possible: this incorporates ICTs.
For 2 years the organisation has been dabbling with ICT through various proferssional development programs. it recognised 2 years ago that they needed to move down the track. The catalyst in 2006 was a LearnScope was . It made CCEG see what was possible.
They have a computer training room equipped with 10 state-of-the art PCs. Thye are also an ACFE Laptop Library in the region. This gives them access to 6 laptops which can be used on-site or in remote locations - by Community College trainers or Community Centre personnel.
In 2008 the Community College will equip a second computer room to enable further access to information communications technologies by students attending all classes at the Community College.
Staff have undertaken some preliminary training in the use of ICT in delivery - both face to face and distance - as part of a 2006 LearnScope project. It is planned that all staff, including sessional trainers, will be further trained in 2008.
Community College East Gippsland has a TAFE VC presence, and this will be developed over time as a means of providing course information, learning materials and assessment tasks etc.
Staff are becoming more familiar with the use of LiveClassroom as a means of communication with each other and with students.

Enabers in the growth and development of e-elarning and blended learning at CCEG:

According to the training manger, Jan Robers, clever use of ICT is made possible in their organisation through the follwoing key elements/ enablers:
  • Management support. Overall acceptance by the staff in the organisation that ICT iss essential to the way t hey do business.
  • Committed / passionate staff.
  • IT support available in-house and equipment is kept up to date
  • A redefinition of job descriptions - mandatory for a willingness to investigate use of ICT in classroom.

Technological infrastructure: problems encountered on the way

Any problems encountered with Live Classroom were problems due to inexperience.
The staff believe that as they get more used to solving these problems, they will have a bigger bank of possible solutions. They did find the Live Classroom helpline particularly useful.
Solution: Need a longer familiarization / induction process.

Blended learning as a sustainable business option

CCEG believes that blended learning is a sustainable business descision as training will be more viable for distance students. It will aid retention and produce results both for the organisaiton and the individual as they will be able to complete their certificate courses without having to travel every week.
THey envisage that there will still be a face to face component.
They are also exploring fully online courses as fee for service activity, but that will depend on what the market will bear.
